Built to take a hit

You don’t test a ute by how shiny it looks in the driveway. You need a full load, corrugations, and potholes for that. Does it handle it, or fall snivelling to bits?

That’s adaptability. And it’s what your body’s built for.

We tend to think of “health” as not being sick — like a dashboard with no warning lights. But that’s not how a real system works. Engines run warm. Muscles ache after work. You get tired, then sleep, then wake up ready to go again.

That’s a system responding — not failing.

The trouble starts when the bounce-back disappears. When a small load knocks you flat. Or when it takes longer to recover than it used to. That’s the body saying, “Mate, my suspension’s shot.”

Adaptability is your body’s suspension system.

It smooths out the bumps — physical, chemical, emotional — that come with living. Lose it, and everything feels rougher. Regain it, and life gets traction again. You can’t buy adaptability. But you can build it.

The recipe’s simple — just not always easy:

  • Move like you mean it.

  • Eat the kind of food that you can still see what it’s made of.

  • Sleep when it’s dark.

  • Let yourself get uncomfortable now and then — sweat, shiver, lift, feel hungry.

Every bit of challenge, handled right, tunes the system. It’s the same reason a truck engine lasts longer when it’s worked hard and serviced well — not left idle in the yard.

In the practice, we see it in the spine. Two people walk in with the same crook back. One takes longer to recover. Same chiropractor, different adaptability.

That’s why health’s not a yes-or-no question. It’s a measure of how well you handle life’s potholes. You can’t avoid them all, and you shouldn’t want to.

A smooth road makes soft drivers.

So next time you get sore, stressed, or knocked about, ask: Did I bounce back? If not, maybe it’s time to service the system — not just patch the dent. The goal isn’t to avoid all the bumps — it’s to keep rolling, steady, ready for the next load.

Like every good rig, you’re built to take the hits.
